MALKLY: TONIGHT WAS A GOOD NIGHT Posted on: Tue 25 Oct 2011
The Carling Cup Round 5 draw will take place on Sat 29th Oct at approx 12.20pm, Sky Sports Soccer Saturday programme. The CardiffCity CarlingCup quarter final match will take place the week commencing Monday 28th November 2011.
City earned a spot in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night thanks to a thoroughly composed victory over Burnley at Cardiff City Stadium. Malky Mackay was therefore in good spirits in his post-match press conference and made no mistake in explaining just how impressed he had been with his side's display.
"A 1-0 win, a clean sheet, no injuries and through to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup is a good night," he said. "We were playing against a good Championship side with game changing players. They've got two centre-forwards; one's cost an awful lot of money and one who will soon cost an awful lot of money so to give due respect to the team we beat tonight - they're a good Championship team and I thought the amount of possession we had and the way we passed the ball about I was delighted with."
Understandably, many of the evenings plaudits were lavished upon young Joe Mason whose fine first-half finish was enough to see the Bluebirds into the last eight for the first time since 1965. The manager was again full of praise for the former Plymouth product, claiming that; "His movement again tonight and his game intelligence belies his experience.
"He had a chance before he scored that we created through his movement, but the one he did get was a beautiful finish. We started the move through midfield, a surge from Don Cowie...and his finish was sublime."
The City manager also paid tribute to the work-rate and willingness for self-improvement that the forward has shown since making the step-up to the Championship level with his summer move to Cardiff City.
"He wants to work hard and play football every day and continue to learn" stated Mackay, adding; "He's got good people around him, both in terms of coaching staff, players at the club and his own domestic people. He's very level headed and as long as he keeps working hard then he's certainly going to get better."
